The Creator's Blog
Become a Digital Creator9/22/2021 DMC S1 - Question 1Whether you’re into TV, Radio or Journalism they can all be delivered to you through one device. The device that you’re reading this on right now can give you a podcast, web-series, movies, music, blog posts and everything we refer to as a CONTENT. If you’re creative, this is awesome news because the world is literally at your fingertips, you just need to create the right content for the right people and make sure they know how to find you (we’ll get into that a little later). Creativity is the defining factor of the 21st century, if you want to make a mark create a digital product. Tori Dunlap, a personal finance podcaster based in the United States announced that she would be taking 3 months off from uploading podcasts to focus on writing a book. Imagine you could take 3 months off work and still have your income flow in because your digital products work for you. That takes a long time to grow, the journey to that kind of sustainability starts now, first step is getting your own piece of internet real estate a.k.a your own website. Now that you have your website it’s time to create, yes maybe you should introduce yourself to your potential audience first but I believe what you do is more important than who you are at this stage. People are visiting your platform because of what you’re doing and they stay because of the relationship they form through interacting with your content. So what is it you’d like to create? Well, whatever it is, I guarantee you it can be delivered in more than one form; CONTENT MEDIA CONVERGENCE. Don’t worry, isn’t that big a deal it’s just a thing we all know of and someone decided to give it a name. An example of content media convergence would be if you wrote a news article and then recorded audio of the article and then maybe also recorded a video of yourself sharing the same content in the written article, this way you’re offering your website visitors a variety of digital products. Yes, this is a lot of work, and it’s only worth it if people actually find your website to enjoy what you’ve prepared. It’s up to you to help people find your website, social media is the simplest answer to this. Create Social Media pages in the same name as your website, bear in mind that everything you post on your social media pages is to promote the content on your website. So stay consistent on what you post about, how often you post, your tone and language and even the colours schemes used in your visuals. The key here is creating a community of people with the same interests as you, not fans. So be sure to interact with the people who comment on your social media pages. Be entertaining, use humour, change your profile picture monthly, give people a reason to follow, use hashtags strategically...these and many more tips can be found on socialmediatoday.com.
Now for the final and by far the most difficult step, stay consistent. Successful YouTubers mostly report having to be consistent with their youtube upload schedule for a minimum of 2 years before they started making money from their content. This could be the case for you, or it could take longer for you, that’s why it’s important you enjoy creating content, learning new skills, seeing yourself improve as a writer, voiceover artist, video editor, designer etc. Happy creating, see you in the digital world.
